PLEIN AIR GLACIER 2018

Plein Air Glacier 2018 image

This summer I participated in my fourth consecutive Plein Air Glacier event with the Hockaday Museum of Art in downtown Kalispell, Montana. Every year 30 or so artists converge on Glacier National Park for a weeks worth of plein air painting. This year was more challenging than the previous years as there was a lot of rain and the Sun Road was not yet open due to a longer than normal winter. However, the artists really responded with some beautifully moody renditions of the beloved landscape. I spent time at Avalanche, Lake McDonald and the old park entrance bridge at West Glacier and completed 5 paintings in total. The exhibit will be up until the end of July so I highly encourage you to get to the Museum to check out the show.

glacier national park oil painting Kintla Lake

From the Shores of Kintla, 15"x30", oil on canvas

From the Shores of Kintla is a larger studio work based on a photograph and plein air session from two summers ago on a stunning day. The North Fork side of Glacier National Park is perhaps my favorite with its dirt roads, light traffic and grand vistas. The mountains surrounding the lake and the mirror like reflections are hard to beat.

A Break in the Clouds plein air painting

A Break in the Clouds, Oil on canvas, 6"x8"

A partly cloudy day is the best time to paint Lake McDonald in Glacier Park. The shifting clouds create a variety of light conditions so one could paint the same view all day and get dramatically different paintings. That is what I did on a beautiful Sunday during Plein Air Glacier 2018. This was my second painting from the same view in which I was drawn to the dark moody sky and brightly lit mountains.
