ABOUT THE ARTIST-
CALIFORNIA PLEIN AIR

plein air artist Jeff Troupe painting

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind".
2Timothy 1:7 KJV

I studied oil painting under Randal Sexton and Brian Blood at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California in the early 2000's. I gravitated to their style of painting which is called Californi plein air. However, I did not choose the path of oil painter back then. I graduated with a degree in computer animation and had a successful 10 year career in the computer games industry.

My wife and I longed to leave the congestion and rat race of the bay area so in 2013 we started heading north. Our first stop was a little known place in the high desert of Northern California called Alturas. It was there that I began painting full time and had my first solo exhibit called Painting the Modoc Landscape at the Alturas Art Center.

At the end of 2014 we were bound for Kalispell, Montana. Life in Montana has been filled with adventure! Within 6 months of moving to Montana we found out that we were pregnant with our first child. Just before our son was born I had a solo exhibit called Downtown Perspective at a local gallery in Kalispell where I painted all of the businesses on main street. The show was a success and a wonderful opportunity to connect with the business owners downtown and showcase the charm of historic main street. This lead me to my most recent two man show with B. Rex Stewart at the Hockaday Museum of Art entitled 'Flathead on Canvas: Small Town Charm to Countryside Splendor' that opened in February of this year. It has been fun to see my California plein air style depicting Montana themes. Between painting and preparing for these shows and keeping up with life as a new dad, I began retooling my digital art skills. In September of this year my wife and I launched Jeff Troupe Designs which is a full service web and graphic design company. I find that the design work provides a great balance to the painting and the added benefit is more quality time with my family. I am truly blessed!
